Arthur enjoyed “playing around with film and photography,” often shooting trick shots and animating objects and titles for his film. He built a darkroom in the cellar and would often experiment with double exposures and overlays. He also inadvertently became a historical filmmaker as he documented his time working in Atlantic City during the 30’s – 70’s and the many trips the family would take to New York City, Philadelphia, and other areas along the eastern seaboard. He built a frame to hold his Super 8 camera and would shoot miles of the highway as he drove.
The year is 1971. (0:08) Jini is in the backyard with pigtails playing with Duke, the family dog. The two gleefully run and jump around. (0:44) Jini waves goodbye to the camera and goes back into the house, Duke following closely behind.
(0:54) Jini and 3 of her friends leave the house in their coats, waving to the camera. With Jini’s mom, Virginia, they all “pile into” Arthur’s car for what Jini assumes is her birthday party. “We probably went roller-skating,” Jini writes. “I’m not sure because, even though he used his dashboard camera, he never shows the destination, although I recognize the road as being on the way to the roller skating rink.” (1:21) Here we have the dashboard camera and the road. Plenty of 1970s era vehicles. The car is stuck behind a large struck for many of the shots. (2:00) Quick shot of an airplane flying in the sky.
(2:03) We see Jini in her “good coat” performing magic tricks using film editing (such as a jump cut to make herself disappear and reappear). She removes her coat and gives a theatrical twirl. (2:57) Here she makes her coat disappear. (3:04) Jini uses a stick as a magic wand to make her childhood best friend Lisa disappear after play-fighting. (3:15) Lisa reappears on the other side of the backyard. They stick their tongues out at each other, showing their “acting chops.” (3:44) Lisa walks over and grabs a hammer to throw at Jini…(3:55) who catches it in the next shot (most likely by reversing footage of her throwing it). (4:01) Lisa throws something else which Jini catches. Then she throws a hatchet that Jini also catches. (4:25) Lisa throws a large shovel and Jini catches it as well with a huge smile on her face. (4:39) Next, a bucket. (4:50) Shots of Jini “catching” all the items from a farther angle. (5:10) Trick shot of Jini effortlessly leaping over a picnic table. (5:16) Lisa does the same. (5:23) Jini lifts a bicycle with the power of her mind and the camera zooms in on Lisa acting astonished. (5:36) Quick upside down shot of Jini with the bicycle. (5:37) The two girls ride their bicycles in the yard until Lisa disappears and reappears under a distant tree. (5:59) The two girls make Virginia disappear with their magic wands. (6:15) Arthur walks towards a tree and then vanishes. (6:28) The girls magically swap bikes and teleport each other. (7:01) Jini rides her bike and then…transforms into Lisa! (7:11) The girls try to have a conversation but keep getting turned around. (7:29) Though the footage is dark, we can see Jini using her magic to lift a rope and tie it around a post at the top of the playhouse. The girls climb up and down. (9:01) Jini climbs out of a cardboard box that opens by itself and then so does Lisa.
(9:22) A shot of a helicopter in the sky that contains Santa Claus. (9:34) The girls (Jini and Lisa) are in the crowded parking lot of the first enclosed mall in the area in their winter coats. They are eating candy canes. (9:47) The helicopter flies above the eagerly awaiting people and begins its descent. We see children on top of their fathers’ shoulders. We can also see a Cardiff Firetruck. Santa can be clearly seen inside the helicopter. (10:23) People make their way to the helicopter or stand on top of their vehicles. The two girls wave at the camera. (10:46) Santa and Mrs. Claus exit the helicopter and walk to the crowd. (10:57) Santa climbs on top of the firetruck and waves at people. (11:32) The helicopter departs, the camera following closely. (11:46) We are now in the crowded mall. Some group dressed in yellow and blue with American flags march through. (12:04) There’s a model of Santa’s Workshop surrounded by children. (12:34) The mall is covered in festive decorations. We can see a Singer store. (12:42) The girls stand by a giant tin soldier outside of a Sears and “Santa Land.”
(13:10) The footage shifts to Jini with her niece, nephew and other family members walking through a park in Jersey or New York State. They all wave and dance for the camera. (13:25) The family runs through the park, the trees are bare of leaves. Scenic mountain views. (13:53) Distant shot of Jini walking behind some trees, camera pans over to other family members. The kids run and jump off rocks. (14:23) The road can be seen in the far distance; a car drives on it. (15:05) Some of the kids are high up in a tree. Joni waves from the top. (15:35) More wandering in the park. (15:59) The whole group climbs onto a rock. Vance helps his little nephew up. (16:44) The group poses in front of the cabin lookout point. (16:55) Long shot of the kids sitting on a rock, their backs facing the camera overlooking a wide vista. Once again, Vance helps his nephew up. (17:21) Dashboard camera shot of the car leaving the park. (18:02) Some sort of obelisk can be seen through the trees. (18:15) Another shot of the giant obelisk. It appears they have gotten out of their car to visit it. This could possibly place this park as High Point State Park in Montague Township, New Jersey (https://www.njhiking.com/best-hikes-in-nj-high-point-monument-trail/). (18:50) The kids pose at the base of the obelisk. Joni throws a rock at the camera as it pans up to show the scale of the structure. (19:20) Majestic sunset views. (19:40) Back on the road.
(19:45) Shot of Duke sitting in a chair and looking up at the camera. (19:48) Duke runs around the backyard. The camera zooms in on another dog in a neighbor’s yard.
(20:14) Back on the road, heading north on RT 30. (20:43) There’s a billboard: “Chrysler…your next car.” It appears to be advertising a similar model and similar slogan shown in this 1969 ad (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cTnZ6v8WioU). (21:30) Sign pointing the way to Marlton and showing that they are on Route 73.
(22:00) A packed parking lot full of cars. Sign for a store called Dee’s. (22:08) The football field at Mainland Regional High School (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mainland_Regional_High_School_(New_Jersey)). Many walks in a line in their caps and gowns. We are at Vance’s graduation in 1971. (22:32) Shot from the bleachers of graduates standing by some cars. Parents stand and wave. (22:41) Footage is dark but we can see Vance walking out. (23:34) The graduates all stand in the distant bleachers underneath an American flag. Someone on stage plays piano. (25:38) The graduates begin marching down from the bleachers.
(26:09) We are now at a clip from Jini’s 7th birthday party in 1966. The kids are all gathered together. (26:13) Jini opens a gift in front of her friends and looks at a card that has a turkey on it. (26:57) Virginia spins a girl around, blindfolded in a game of pin the tail on the donkey. She almost pins it on the camera! (27:17) Virginia spins another girl who gets it right on the money. (27:37) Now it’s Jini’s turn. She almost gets it. (28:00) Another girl attempts. (28:20) Another girl almost pins it on the window. (28:38) Another girl almost bumps into a table while the others laugh. (29:07) Virginia pulls some toys (?) from a paper bag. (29:15) The girls are all seated at the table wearing party hats. A large chocolate cake sits in the center. Vance lights the candles on everyone’s cupcake while Virginia lights the center.
(29:51) We jump to more of Christmas 1971. The whole family is seated at the same dinner table while Jini eats some food for the camera. (30:12) Virginia passes around a box of chocolates to the kids in the living room. (30:38) A niece sits on the couch reading a book. (30:54) The nephew sits by the TV making faces for the camera. (31:07) Family or friends (?) enter the house. (31:35) Jini plays with some new ice skates.
(31:57) Now we are at Jini’s 13th birthday party in 1972. She jumps out of bed and runs down the stairs. (32:06) She shows off some gifts which include a clock, some shorts, a bowling ball and a reel-to-reel tape recorder. “Not a normal present,” Jini writes. “But I loved it and I think it started me on my “technical” career.” (33:13) Jini sits at a table listening to her tape recorder. (33:30) Jini sits in the living room surrounded by friends and family.
